Re: Book Recommendations
(Anonymous) 2015-03-18 12:52 am (UTC)(link)The setting background is sort of a post apocalyptic, alternate history thing - at some point, a disastrous comet impact rendered much of the world uninhabitable, except for a small stretch along the West Coast of North America. It also did a few other things, though: it froze those societies sometime around the Regency or Victorian era, and also opened all kinds of time nonsense and changed the weather patterns so that there's wooly mammoths and Sabertooth tigers running around, and also all kinds of magic and stuff.
So basically the end result is this sort of Lovecraft meets Dickens or Austen Victorian dark fantasy thing. And that's something that could easily go wrong but they're actually extraordinary well done. They're written in a Victorian style that never becomes cloying or parody or pastiche - they just ended up being really comforting and cozy and fun. Couldn't recommend them more strongly. RIYL genre pastiche, Lovecraft, 19th century English lit, ancient evils from beyond time.
