I don't think it has anything to do with reading comprehension. As others have noted, race wasn't really a big source of contention in the stories. It was only called out when a character had a noticeably darker or lighter skin tone - Ged's close friend (forget his name) had very dark skin, and I /think/ Tenar had light skin, but that could just be me associated yellow/blonde hair with pale skin.

I always imagined the base skin tone of Earthsea to be Korra-esque, and to be frank I've never understood when Waterbenders were called POC - seeing as they're a fictional race composed of attributes of a number of a number of real world cultures that exists in a fictional world without our world's specific racial issues. As with Waterbenders, so with Earthsea.

NAYRT but I thing the reason people still use "POC" for fictional races is just to note that it doesn't offer up the same boxed set of lily-white characters that is considered the default. It can be very meaningful for people who don't get to see or read about characters who have a similar appearance to themselves.

That's reasonable. It just seems to come up most often WRT fanworks and cosplay, and that's where it bugs me, y'know? Like people complaining about white-chick-cosplaying-Korra. I can get behind professional casting complaints when stuff like this is brought up, but for fans having fun?

That's clearly not the case with this secret, of course, given that it's about book recommendations instead of fanworks. I guess I've just got a gut reaction when I hear someone labeling a non-Earthly fantasy race POC.

TLDR; That makes sense, and I think I'm mixing up a bunch of separate issues in my head. Thanks for helping me clear that up. :)
