But I think it was more about his political commentary than his books.

He's got some pretty messed up views about rape and sexual assault, though, and that's off-putting to me.

Same here. I only ever knew about him as a political commentator; I had no idea that he wrote historical fiction, or was a screenwriter (as someone mentioned regarding Ben Hur, which I've seen), or that he was gay and had a partner for decades. I feel I need to do some more reading (and thanks for the heads-up on the rape/sexual assault stuff).

But it is all hearsay and the nephew was contesting Vidal's will, so I don't know how accurate it is, but given the Polanski thing, I wouldn't be surprised if he said something like that about abuse by Catholic priests.
