3. ...Gundam SEED was always campy, sry2say.

17. No, she is gorgeous all the time. :[

23. Ugh, I hate that Miyazaki is MIYAZAKI OMG, for serious. Only half of what I've seen of his I actually liked, and it annoys me how much he recycles themes and motifs. It annoyed me when CLAMP did it too. The message doesn't always have to be that TECHNOLOGY SUCKS, NATURE RULES, especially because technology itself isn't the problem, it's how we use it. I would buy his viewpoint more if he depicted both sides. Also I hate his HMC adaptation with a burning passion.

25. YES. Loved that film.

30. And once again I am unfazed by an "OMG DISTURBING!!" image. |D

37. You don't have to write to be a member of fandom.

23. Uh...were you paying attention to Ashitaka in Princess Mononoke? He had a "let's keep things balanced" message.

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I haven't seen that in foreeeeeever, did he say that? I remember the nature spirits versus the big bad guns mostly. I was thinking primarily of Nausicaa, though. (Which I also haven't seen it in forever; I didn't really feel the need to watch it twice.)

Butting in, sorry

[identity profile] yui-hime.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Nausicaa wasn't all OMG NATURE>TECHNOLOGY, either. She was more interested in keeping people-- her people, especially-- safe, and the way things were, nature was the less iminent threat. Technologies and the people using them were simply more important.

[identity profile] kurozukin-a.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Um, maybe you were actually watching Ferngully or Captain Planet something? Princess Mononoke is definitely not a "good and kind creatures of the forest versus evil of technology" movie. :/ The people of the town were generally depicted as just trying to get by in the world and the forest gods were just as ruthless if not more so.

As for Nausicaa, you should read the manga. It goes much, much farther than the movie does, and (without spoiling too much) has a much more... morally complex ending.

Re: 23. Same here, about the MIYAZAKI IS MIYAZAKI point. I really don't like hardly any of his movies, and people look at me like I've grown a second head when I say it. His movies aren't *that* amazing, honestly--I think they drag in a lot of points, especially Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. I did like HMC, but I read the book after I'd seen the movie, and I wished that they'd put more book-verse stuff in it. =/

...THIS IS GETTING KIND OF SCARY

[identity profile] shadsie.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really disturbed 30, either. Must be that I'm a bit strange, but when I look at it, all I could think was "Is that physically possible?" As in - look closely - Rei's spine is on the floor, yet her lower half is all up off the floor and contorted. I'd think without a backbone, her lower half would be like a floopy piece of meat. Hence, the blood doesn't disturb me - it's the physical implausiblity that has me puzzled.

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, good point. I didn't even catch that. But hey, it's guro; who needs physical plausibility, amirite? Though you'd think, for the people who like that kind of thing, the more realistic it is the hotter it is too. But then I remember how normal porn is so idk.

[identity profile] shadsie.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not into guro, but I'm not phased my much. I mean - I grew up in a family that raised its own meat and one of my major hobbies is collecting, cleaning, and making art from the skulls and bones of dead animals I find in the woods. (Look up my name on DA if you're interested). So, yeah, gorey stuff doesn't phase me. (Nor do I find it sexy. @_@ )

It's just that - backbones are important to mammals, right? Especially to humans (humanoids). Unlike the common octopus, we've got muscles that attatch there. Unless rigor mortis has already set in, I'd think poor Rei there would be more "floppy."

XD. I'm afraid the OP failed to offend me, he/she simply puzzled me from a science perspective with the implausible fanart.

Have you watched Princess Mononoke? I'm not asking this in any "defensive" or argumentative way, just curious. because i think his message was exactly what you want it to be and he did depict both sides. plus, what "natural theme" does Howl's moving castle have, really? i didn't catch that there at all. Just a "don't eat shooting stars" and a "Howl is really hot" theme. Please note, this is asked in the most neutral way possible. i mean no argument, only discussion. :)

[identity profile] crackjaw.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I have, but not recently enough that I remember the specifics; when I wrote that, I was thinking mostly of Nausicaa, as I've said. Also, I worded what I meant wrong: my complaint was mostly that he reuses themes and motifs so much I find his movies boring after a while, because I know what to expect. And most of his "message" movies do seem to paint society as innately bad with his protagonists being exceptions. This corresponds to Howl's Moving Castle, too, with the pointless, shameful war (that was not in the book at all, by the way, and it really annoys me that he'd get rid of a perfectly great story and replace it with a recycled one of his own), and I personally think it's no coincidence Howl turns himself into a bird for no reason. I'm pretty sure this has to do with his viewpoints IRL. IIRC, he once said in an interview that he wanted Japan to fall into the ocean.

[identity profile] germania731.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i read the "thread" after i wrote the reply, so now i see you meant Nausicaa.
i think it'd be funnier if California fell into the ocean. (I'm Californian. (I'm kidding.))

I am too and I'd agree with you, but I suck at swimming D:
