26. I can't speak for manga, but American Comics? 30 or 40 years worth of material, nine times out of ten, isn't necessary to catch the hang of things. (Usually twenty or so years ought to do it... but I'm a Marvel fangirl, so god knows about the DCU.) You just have to be willing to ignore your social responsibilities for a week or two. For fandom canon-thumping... man, I say two weeks is worth the sacrifice. :)

Whoa good timing in comparison to my post, haha.

I could probably get back into the swing of things AGAIN, but every time I feel like I can settle down something new and big and generally pointless is coming back up to shake everything I knew once into oblivion.

Duuude, that is so weird. I was just typing out a reply to your post regarding online archives from the major distributors when I got your comment. Figured it might be redundant, so I deleted it... but ANYWAY.

Yeah, once every few years they earn a *facepalm* at the very least, but for all intents and purposes, I'm still new school - so it all has a level of intense and extreme delight for me when a new writer takes over for these "big events" and it actually turns out good... or great, as is the case atm with Messiah Complex happening in the X books. (One woman's opinion, granted.)

Depends on what you do with it, too, though. I think for anyone still writing fic or RPing in current timelines, there's something of a responsibility there to try to get at least a basic understanding of what's happening. Otherwise, focusing on one team or a handful of characters pairs things down to a manageable amount of reading material.

Messiah Complex is love. I'm just sad New X-Men will be ending this month for the sake of X-Force. :(

There is, however, Legacy to look forward to. (Be still my leaping fangirl heart.)

I figure the amount of damage the teams are going to see by the end of this thing is going to warrant something seriously kickass with the new title. I don't know if its confirmed, but there are talks about Young X-Men to replace it? I hope? Perhaps?

I wonder how Legacy will turn out? Marvel has been pretty hush-hush about a lot of the post-Messiah Complex storylines.. which is good, but holy crap do I want information about Young X-Men. :( I'm not ready to let go of Rockslide, Mercury, Dust, Hellion, Surge, Pixie, Prodigy and Anole-- especially after I pretty much just got into them less than 3 months ago.

I'm sure X-Force will be good too, concidering Yost and Kyle will be writing it... and everything I've read of their's has been pretty rad. Still skeptical, though.

I often find that early summer (after exams) or Winter break are really good times to get into comics and catch up. My friend and I actually had a comic "book club"-- granted, it was only two of us, but we really supported keeping eachother on track. Lots o' fun. :B

The weird thing I also find about popular series like Spider-man or X-Men, is that they get rebooted a lot, so there will be one specific point, where you can just ignore a lot of the older generation stuff and casually ease into it.

Re: 26

[identity profile] luciademedici.livejournal.com 2008-01-12 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. There are enough significant markers to follow within continuity to jump in at one particular point and just run with it.

Not only that, but seperate specific series are fairly short in comparison to the main runners... for example: Astonishing X-Men vs. Uncanny.

Spider-man's abit more complicated though. I'm kind of glad they're fusing most of the titles into one; how many titles do you need to tell the same story? (*cough*backinblack*cough*)
