I think "whiny and annoying" is an overused and often inaccurate way to talk about female anime characters, but even if I had to, Haruhi is about the last one I'd think to call "whiny."

I don't think she was whiny and annoying on her own but whenever she was faced with things that the rich guys did that were a culture shock to her, she was constantly making weird faces and making sure the audience knew exactly how ~weird~ she thought they were being. Like, yeah the boys were over the top but girl relax and let the people be happy how they want to be happy, who cares if it's pointless or overdramatic or weird, why so judgey all the time

Tbf I think this about most "straight man surrounded by comedy group who is always making downer remarks and observations" characters, so Haruhi is no exception

You can say she's not annoying, so long as you're aware that what you can tolerate may annoy others, and not an accurate reading of the character, too.

I actually agree. I always hated the 'tsukkomi/boke' routine. When one person is excited and the other acts like they are such an annoyance for being happy about something.

but the guys had a habit of giving her backhanded compliments about her class/lifestyle so haruhi giving it right back to them was only fair

Yeah, this, they were total assholes to her about not being rich, but we never see them get flak for it. :/ She's well within her rights to make faces so long as they treat her life like a sideshow attraction.

I'm not saying the guys weren't annoying either, they were too. They were coming from a position of ignorance tho. Fighting ignorance by giving childishness and sarcasm right back to them instead of telling them what they were doing wrong and trying to help them stop is a super childish way of dealing with things. Then the series tried to portray her as the mature, more enlightened one

But she did, on many occasions, try to tell them that there was nothing weird about how she lived and they were being unreasonable about it. They didn't listen and they didn't learn, so of course she'd get sarcastic.

I'm singling out her behavior because the secret is about her behavior. It's not "really weird" that I'm sticking to the topic actually at hand.

If the secret had said everyone in this show is annoying, I'd have talked about the guys too. It didn't, so I was talking about how the character they singled out annoyed me too.

Please don't be one of those "you didn't mention every single issue in the series so you must think this is the only one" people.

She's kinda dull and unenthusiastic compared to everyone around her, but I don't think it's bad. She's better than a lot of other female (or male) characters in the harem genre by a long shot.
