Domestic Violence in Manga and Anime

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have any recs for anime or manga that have domestic violence as a major theme (I know of Gunjo, which is great, and a couple of others that have it in passing)? It doesn't matter if it's m/m, f/f, or m/f. It could also be a Japanese film or show if it's easily accessible and has subtitles

If this seems like an odd request, I'll go ahead and mention that it's for an essay I need to write for one of my classes (I've been doing some googling too, but I just want to know if anyone has some personal recommendations)

OP

I had forgotten that mangaupdates has a ton of tags to sort through. Thanks! That will probably make things a bit easier

Lonesome Echo (yuri) maybe? It's not a terribly deep examination of the issue of domestic abuse (the conflict is solved pretty easily, the victim gets a neat, happy little ending and that's that), but it's somewhat unique in that the abuser is female so it might be kind of interesting

If you don't mind it being played for laughs, then plenty of DV in Ranma 1/2.

Major theme:
- Count Cain/Godchild (manga)
- Kaze to ki no uta (old yaoi manga)

Minor/side theme:

- Fruits basket (manga) Several sohma children suffer abuse, but in the manga they go into a lot more detail espcally Rin's situation.

- Penguin Brothers (manga) One of the main characters background story mainly and it becomes somewhat of a side theme.

Ano Hi no Kimi wo Dakishimeta nara -- yaoi manga. Deals with it decently until the WTF part with the ex-girlfriend.

It's a Japanese live action drama but Last Friends.

^ this one's main plot is pretty much a young woman who moves in with her loving boyfriend only for him to start abusing her. I'm not sure it's particularly satisfying as a show by the end, but it does deal seriously with her feelings, the abuse cycle, trying to leave, etc. Her friends also support her and talk about domestic violence issues, too. I'm not sure if there's a distinct Japanese element in that sense but there's a lot of exposition on the violence itself.

This is late, but thank you to everyone who offered recs! I don't think I would have come across some of them otherwise
