If it's a), then, well, there's this stereotype about hyenas being cowardly, mean, backstabbing animals. So people generally prefer "nobler" species, like large felines.
It it's b), then it's because hyenas are actually one of the main reasons African wild dogs are endangered. Hyenas steal the prey wild dogs kill, and they also kill the dogs' pups. Since the dogs have very high energy requirements (about 15 mJ per day), any reduction in the pay-off they're getting from hunting and breeding is dangerous to the species as a whole. They don't do particularly well in areas where hyenas are present.
