Re: Writing a Good OC (and/or recs?)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-21 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like the OC should be something that's inspired by the world. For instance, I write OCs in my Tolkien fics because the world is populated with unnamed people in the background or family that has to exist but aren't ever mentioned. I've always been curious about them.

In one fic, I used OCs to extend Thranduil's family. Thranduil remained the center of the story (actually it was a slash story that was the main plot) but I've always wanted to know about his wife and his mom (and I basically have a lot of thoughts about him) so I added interactions with him and his family -- with people who care about him -- and looked at how that changed my understanding of his character. And I explored the fact that he might be a grandpa since he's so old, so I added a kid too (which can be controversial to some).

In a different fic, I had OCs who were Elrond's personal servants. He has to have people cleaning up after him and stuff but he's so nice that I'm sure they were his friends too after a fashion. I also added OCs who were councilors and healers that Elrond worked with. I just wanted to flesh out the world more and not have Elrond seem so isolated.

I could see adding OCs in other places too. Like, I am intensely interested about the Beornings and how their society was set up. A story following some random dude who lives there would be interesting to me.

Stuff like that. I just feel that if the OC has a purpose in the story and you've given some thought to flaws and such, then you're on the right track.
