I'll counter your anecdotal data with my anecdotal data.

I may not have been in fandom longer than you, but I have been in it long enough to see some girls and women declare that they only like male characters because there are NO GOOD FEMALE CHARACTERS! I've even seen it used as an argument on some f!s discussion "back in the day". There was even a "Strong Female Character" spreadsheet somebody created some years back where they reduced about 70 female characters to one-line tropes and declared that there were no good female characters.

I think it has actually died down a bit these days, through there still is a tendency for some in fandom to hold female characters to higher standards.

I think that was a flowchart/decision tree, not a spreadsheet -- at least if you're thinking of what I'm thinking of -- but I agree it was full of shit.

Is it this?: http://i.huffpost.com/gen/208704/FEMALE-CHARACTER-FLOWCHART.jpg

Bigger version here -- http://www.overthinkingit.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Overthinking-It-Female-Character-Flowchart.png

-- because I went to look for a readable version and regretted it, and sharing is caring. Holy fuck the sheer amount of bullshit in that flowchart, what the fuck even.

AYRT - yeah, flowchart. Sorry, I have spreadsheets on the brain right now :)

And the other anon that replied to you is linked the exact one I was thinking of.

oh ugh I remember this one.

I "played" it with some of my own characters, and discovered that all of them (male and female) failed because each one also symbolizes something.

ohhhh man I remember that stupid fucking flowchart

back in the day I was exactly like those fans and, as a result, I couldn't even WRITE female characters without reducing them to cardboard cutouts

now I know better

I thought that flowchart was criticizing how narrow the definitions of an acceptable female character were. They're pretty sarcastic there.

How can you make the argument that "so many people don't like female characters because sexism!" and then argue that there's plenty of good female characters out there? If there are so many people that are *that* ate up with misogyny, then it logically follows that there would be a dearth of good female characters, because both misogynistic men and women won't write them, and even many more well-intentioned but clueless people often won't write them either.

I think it has actually died down a bit these days, through there still is a tendency for some in fandom to hold female characters to higher standards.

Or a lot of people are holding them all to the same standards, and creators are failing, and you're blaming fans for not liking bad characters, or for not enjoying seeing the female characters they love get no development or focus whatsoever.
