I'm in full agreement there. Way back in the day, I saw a list of Pokemon ships that must have been at least fifty or sixty entries long, if not more -- and that was at least five years ago. And at least half of them were named after in-jokes or tenuous connections that nobody would ever know unless they happened to be on the message board when the name was created. Or they were so thoroughly ambiguous that they could apply to at least three or four different pairings.

I can imagine that *creating* those names was kind of fun for the people who thought them up. But actually using them as a tool to categorize things? No fun at all.
