Unless I'm misunderstanding (and I may be), why not just remain anon? That's what I do. I have a DW account and a fandom name and everything, but no way in hell am I going there...

Seconded above. You can also choose to anon a comment even if you're signed in (which allows you to get notifications even if you commented anon.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
...I did not know this. (Now what was that password again? LOL) I found a DW invite code somewhere (think it was on LJ aaaaaaaaages ago and started an account, but abandoned it because A) I didn't want to post anything publicly and B) I saw no use for it. C) Also I feel the same as OP.

OTOH, if it could make my commenting life/following threads here easier, I might just try and resurrect it. Plus the GIFs. Aaaaaaaaaaallllll the GIFs.

Yeah, there's a little bell on the comment header; as long as you're signed in, you can click the bell to set up notifications (whether you made the comment or not).

STA: Ooops -- I've been informed that the abilty to receive notifications on a per-comment basis is a perk of a paid account. Sorry to raise your hopes only to dash them. :(

Oh huh! I had no idea how anon people ever found the replies to their comments. (I've never left an anon one myself.)

It's also possible to bookmark an anon comment, I think. (That's more pull than push, though.)

For what it's worth, there may be some nasty stalker trolls (though my personal theory is that they are all the same person), but almost everyone else in the community is really against those trolls. I noticed people are quick to rush to the defense of whoever.

I tried going unanon for awhile, but I found I watered down all of my comments and thought too much before posting. I'm not even a mean anon, I just like having the freedom to say the first thing that comes to mind without being dogpiled for it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Not a chance in hell am I going un-anon. Although, I gotta give credit to those who do.

I feel you. The idea of having a troll who hated you used to be my nightmare, which is why at some point I stopped commenting about any kind of serious political views (heh irony is a bitch).

If it makes you feel better, the worst they can do is talk shit and say mean things.

The reply notifications make it worthwhile. I miss when most people on this site had usernames. The sea of anons puts so much distance between commenters and it makes me sad.

[personal profile] thistlechaser 2015-03-23 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I wish the majority of people used their names, instead of the other way around.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been thinking about making an account lately too, I mean I'd still essentially be "anon" because I don't want to link my real self to f!s but I've been delaying doing it.

I'm not so concerned about the trolls but some days f!s is just extra bitchy and everyone seems to jump on whatever flaw they can find in a comment. I don't know if I want notifications of people arguing with me over semantics all the time, with anon I can at least leave it alone easily enough if I need a break.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but that's why I haven't made a named sock account so far.

I like the way I can just shut down the page and go and do something else if the negativity of some threads is getting out of hand. If I kept on getting email alerts, my morbid curiosity would get the better of me I think.

It's not that bad! And as others mentioned, you can always comment anon even when signed in for when you feel like you need to get your wank on XD (no notifications, though). I think that there are fewer hateranons than it might seem, really, though maybe I only feel that way because I've never had any of my own.

"you can always comment anon even when signed in for when you feel like you need to get your wank on XD (no notifications, though)"

Odd, I can set up notifications on any comment (mine or not, anon or not) when I'm signed in: I wonder if that might be a paid account thing?

It is fairly easy to avoid the trolls. Don't react to them. For example, there is nothing that anyone has against Jaybie, but as we saw with last night's thread, it is a great attention getter. That thread will get me by for a couple of months. Then someone else will take a bait, even if it is just to post 0/10 or the troll in the dungeon gif, and that'll do too. Just avoid that, and if it seems like someone is picking a fight over known troll topics like SJW, or autism (no such thing, understand) or how you smell and your gay gypsy momma smells, or anything like that, don't try fighting back. That response is the win. The way to beat the trolls is not to engage the trolls, and especially try not to correct the trolls.

I dunno, my favorite place on the Internet for years was We Hunted the Mammoth, which involved feeding trolls till they exploded. It was GLORIOUS, and incredibly cathartic to troll the trolls.

Of course, those trolls believed things like Saudi Arabia was a matriarchy. And they weren't trolling. They honestly believed that. (Yes, we knew. Because that dude used his legal name, and his website's email, which was linked to the website he made about the lawsuit he set on his college's women's studies department, which made the news. We didn't even have to stalk him for this either, he got offended we thought he was trolling so gave us all the evidence and links himself.)

People here sometimes say I am patient. That's because I get all my aggression out THERE. The trolls are way more satisfying there; we used to have a Troll of the Year contest! (FYI, the Saudi Arabia guy? LOST.)

There's nothing wrong with remaining anon if that's what makes you comfortable (and if you enjoy it more power to you!), but if you want an account why not try it out? It isn't like you have to stick with it. If you decide you don't like it you can always delete or abandon the account.

I know having a username can be intimidating (I've been a lurker on and off too) but imo most people here are pretty cool. We do get trolls now and then (and bad ones at that), but those people could go after anyone, so it isn't necessarily likely that they would target you.

Anyway, I like notifications; as you say, they're very helpful. Also, icons. ICONS.

But whatever, f!s has always had anons and users, and we need both.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-22 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have thought about it too, and I am also intimidated by the trolls. Also, I usually only leave about five comments across a week's worth of posts, and I don't know if it is worth logging in for just that.

Lol the chances of getting your own trail of haters is p
way low. At best, you put your foot in your mouth or say something unpopular, and you'll get some disagreeable replies for a day.

If you are a dude though, you're totally guaranteed to trigger a flow of troll, but you will also be estrogen bait jsyk.

Text: I keep considering making a dreamwidth account so I can actually join in discussions in all the secrets I submit especially because I’m in the UK and posts go up in the middle of the night for me and it’s a lot easier to follow discussions with notifications.

And pretty much everyone seems friendly. But the trolls intimidate me.

Fear not, OP. Trolls are a suspicious and cowardly lot. Dress up your icons as giant bats and you have nothing to fear!
