I like Barney, but I'm a little concerned for you if you deeply identify with him (although I guess it depends on what aspect you identify with him on)

Even if you identify with a character it's best not to take it personally when someone doesn't like that character.

When I like or dislike a fictional character, things I like in a real person don't always reflect what I like or dislike. The biggest example I can give you is I like villains who kill and do bad things, but in reality that wouldn't exactly be the type of person I would friend.

I also find a lot of characters annoying who might be just fine to get along with in real life, it may just be that they don't serve the story in the way that I'd want (maybe they are in a comedy and I don't find them funny) so even if they aren't the worst, I still dislike them.

Yeah, I sort of get that. Especially if it's sort of not-entirely-good characters, and it's with more recent friends, I'd feel they'd not be friends with me if they knew me better.

I feel you. It's like one friend said they didn't like Viggo Mortensen's public personae. Actually, 'you dislike the thing I like' is a pretty solid basis for drama.
