As for the thing: I guess it's because if something is 'implausible' enough when it comes to canon, you can kind of let loose and play around with it, but sometimes little details feel like they're not 'random' enough to trigger that looseness so you get picky.
idk, something like that. I can totally see getting into a massive argument about character ages or somesuch XD
It's like with me, the worst arguments I get into are about movies I think are mediocre. If I hated the movie I'm usually like eh, whatever. Enjoy. But if I thought it was meh, I can get into these massively long-drawn-out smackdowns about how IT'S JUST NOT AMAZING OK, IT'S NOT. So pointless.
