I think the Japanese Drama Series "Orange Days" and the Tanpatsu Drama "Hitsudan Hostess" have made a good job with their portrayal of deaf characters.

The thing that annoyed me to death about this manga is that Shouko never had a chance to convey her voice to the readers. Everytime she had a sign language conversation (and those were 90% of her dialogues) one of the other characters had to put into their words what she said. This is a manga, for god's sake, just write what she said in sign language. I wanted to read Shouko's words, not the other characters'.

I think that was actually a deliberate thematic thing -- showing how Shouko was so muted and ignored by the people around her, always having words put in her mouth. On the rare occasions she lashed out and actually showed what she was feeling by doing things like fighting Shouya, or attempting suicide, it seemed so out-of-character for her because she hadn't been allowed to show her true character or internal thoughts very much.

But I'm not sure they managed to convey that nearly as well as they should have, or followed it through to a satisfying resolution, so the complaint's still valid.

The only thing I remember about this manga is that there was a group of people in Japan that tried to ban it because it showed how deaf people are generally treated in Japan (not so good).

She’s one of the core foundations of the story but she was one of the blandest characters in the entire series. I feel like the author didn’t know how to write a deaf character and did a terrible job with her.
