Song lyrics you misunderstood that changed the whole song

(Anonymous) 2015-03-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, did it ruin it for you? Or are you fine with both "versions" of it?

I suppose this is heresy, but I enjoyed Led Zepplin's "Immigrant Song" more when half the lyrics were unintelligible to me. Now that I know what they're actually singing, it's somehow dimished the song for me.

I totally get that, I feel that way about a lot of songs. I think it just takes away a bit of the air of mystery, and whatever the real lyrics are aren't as cool as whatever feeling you could get from the gibberish, haha.

*nods* I guess most of the time I prefer music when it's more pure sound -- instrumentals or vocals that I can't understand. There are only a few performers whose lyrics I enjoy.

That's the reason I love listening to a lot of music in languages I don't understand. Even if I get the general meaning from reading the translation, the vocals keep on being intelligible for me.

Yeah I feel that way about opera; as long as I know the general meaning of what they're singing about, I can concentrate on just the pure emotion and the beauty of the harmony. (Bjoerling/Merril "Au fond du temple saint" -- "We've been friends all our lives, and though we've now fallen in love with the same woman, we won't let that destroy our friendship.")

When I heard the song Gold on the radio, I apparently misheard quite a bit of it. I heard "Chasing down the gods" as "Jason found the gods" and "I hope you find your dreams" as "I hope you find your fleece". I thought the song was about Jason and the Golden Fleece (which seemed to fit in with the "Gold" theme) and I freaked out and thought that was so amazing, I went and downloaded it right away. Then I searched the lyrics online, and the lyrics are just generic and vague. It's still kind of catchy, but they totally missed out on not writing about Jason and the Argonauts.

Actually, they really did. I've never heard the song but I like your version of it!

Barenaked Ladies' "The Old Apartment."

I thought the lyric was "she left me, and her body keeps me warm." So I thought it was a song about a guy torn up over a break-up, returning to the last place where he and his ex were happy, trying to recapture those old feelings and just falling into anger and despair.

When I found out that it's really, "she loves me, and her body keeps me warm," I'm kind of ashamed to say that the song lost a lot of its poignancy for me.

There's a few different ways to read that song, depending on how reliable we consider the narrator to be. I often tend toward the reading that they're still together, but whatever spark they had is gone, they're just together out of inertia now. He broke into the old apartment to see if being in that space would help him remember how it felt back when they were first together and made all those memories.

That's the reading I tend to go with, as well, since it comes closest to what I originally thought the song was meant to be. Doesn't quite hit that same melancholy sweet spot for me though, heh.

DA - It's also possible to read it as the 'she' in 'she loves me' being an entirely different woman. He broke up with his ex, but is still thinking about her and isn't willing to let go of the memories they had, even though he's with someone else now.

When I first saw Les Mis, I heard Javert's line in "The Confrontation" as "I was born to scum like you" rather than "with". It didn't ruin the song for me, but damn does the implication change.

There's a song that plays all the time at work that's about drowning the world out with music, where the singer keeps repeating "I feel invincible with my headphones on." It was ages before I realized that it wasn't "I feel invincible til my head falls off." I thought it was about doing stupid things and ignoring the risks until they smack you in the face. I like my version better.

So for years, I had no idea what the Red Hot Chili Peppers were saying in "Scar Tissue. The actual lyric I couldn't understand is "With the birds I'll share/ This lonely view," but before I looked it up, I'd decided they were singing "with the burdens shed, it's a lonely view." So, I constructed this idea that the sarcastic mister know-it-all had "shed his burdens," whatever they may be, thereby isolating himself.

Finding out the true lyrics didn't ruin the song because my version has a similar meaning.

Haha, I remember when that came out and me and my friends thought it said "with the bird shit, it's a lonely view". I still think it sounds like that, tbh.

The part of that green day song that goes "To alcohol and cigarettes!" I always hears "To baklava and cigarettes!"

idk how that happens, but baklava is delicious so I like my lyrics better.

I'm fine with both versions, but I used to think "Kiss from a rose on the gray" was "Kiss from a rose on the grave"

I'm pretty sure it is "Kiss from a rose on the grave" in Angela Aki's version, which is my favorite version of the song anyway. I don't know if she also misheard it or something, but I think it suits the more somber tone of her son anyway.

From the Keith Urban song "You'll Think of Me", I always thought it said "take your cap and leave my sweater" but it apparently says "take your CAT and leave my sweater". I was with my mom once and she said "did that song just say 'take your cat and leave my sweater'?" which I thought was hilarious because it clearly said cap, which made way more sense because he was talking about articles of clothing. But then later on I found out it apparently DOES say cat.

Although now that I'm looking up lyrics again they say cap so I don't know where I got that it actually was cat after all.

...I'm confused.

This one song by Florence and the Machine. I mishear the lyrics they write a lot, actually, but in particular, I heard "I never knew daylight could be so violent" as "I never knew I could be so violent." I thought it was about someone accidentally killing someone or something but nope, it's just weird.

There were a LOT of Elton John songs I liked until I realized what the lyrics actually were. I think he should fire Bernie Taupin.

In "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)" by Eurythmics, I thought for years that when Annie Lennox sings the "must be talking to an angel" refrain, she was saying "must we tuck into an armchair?" I thought the point of the song was that she really loved the person she was singing about, but didn't want them to end up having a boring, staid life together, which was what the armchair symbolized. I still like this interpretation.
