Foods you tried because of fiction

(Anonymous) 2015-03-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
After watching the Avengers, my friend and I went to a Lebanese restaurant to get Shwarma.

I've heard of a lot of people trying Turkish Delight because of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Most of them were disappointed. I still got some when I went to a store that sells foreign stuff, and they had small packages of it... and I really liked it! But they don't have those little packets of it anymore. :(

I wanted to try crystallized pineapple after reading that Harry Potter book where some guy kept eating it, but I could never find it.

Turkish Delights.

Not as good as I had imagined so long from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Ugh, same. The meal I had prior to them, that was some fine dining otoh.

They're better if you've been on wartime rationing for a couple years and have had literally no candy. Otherwise, yeah, they suck.

I've had really good Turkish Delights and really mediocre ones. The best Turkish Delights I've had came from a Persian grocer. Those were incredible.

Same here. Too sweet, too sticky.

I read somewhere that Turkish Delight is only really good when it's fresh, and is only gross when it's stale. It gets stale reaaaally fast apparently. If you bought it packaged in a store somewhere, it'd probably been sitting there too long to be any good.

oh god, I love Jaffa cakes. Some Brit friends introduced me to them.

Toblerones because of Cabin Pressure.

They were not that good.

I was the same way about Turkish Delight. It's nice, but I don't love it the way Edmund clearly did!

Turkish delight is the best. I didn't try it because of that book, though. I tried it years later because I happened to find some in the Israeli food market I was in and oh my goodness I never knew roses tasted as good as they smell.

btw "crystallized" pineapple is probably just dried/preserved pineapple. Commonly available in the bulk section in most supermarkets around here, and I have definitely seen it when I've gone to the USA for visits.

I love Turkish Delight - the real kind, not the hideous British confectionary that has same name. I don't remember if I first tried it because of the book or not though. The book definitely made me wish I could drink it as a hot liquid (which sounds gross now, but appealed when I was a kid).

Something to try at home, maybe?

Dango. Made them myself and all. They taste super neutral (which is to be expected because you eat them with a sauce or topping) but my main problem is the texture. They're so squishy and chewy and ...ugh. Nah, not for me.

Not food, but your Avengers example is why I listened to the Trouble Man soundtrack (and ended up buying the movie, which was great btw)

Okonomiyaki!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
There's a character in Ranma 1/2 who has an okonomiyaki restaurant. It prompted me to look up a recipe for it and later try it in a Japanese restaurant. I was pleased that my homemade okonomiyakis weren't too different from the restaurant's!

10/10, very recommended.

Oh, I really wish. Due to my dietary restrictions I only eat foods that people have confirmed to be hahal, which often means most of the foods in fiction (particularly if they are alcohol tinged) are off for me.

With that said though, I have tried Turkish Delight and it's really subjective. Some of the flavors are really good while others... not so much. I have tried a lot of things actually, due to my family and I being world travelers.

Did you try Baklava?

I ended up trying Cheesesteak after watching it on Man vs Food. So so so good and so so so fattening. Totally worth it.

eta: Wait, you meant fiction! Hummm I think the only thing I tried was Miso soup and it was pretty meh. Also lamb, which was also really good.

Marzipan! I was kind of meh about it as a kid, but there was an old timey store nearby that sold it half-dipped in chocolate and I ended up developing a taste for it. I first tried it because I read about it in something - I think it was The Nutcracker?

LWW may have prompted me to try turkish delight that wasn't Fry's, like the time I went to a Turkish restaurant when I was 19 and ordered it for desert. These days I only get it from a kebab shop (doner kebabs - almost the same thing as shwarma).

Fanfic made me try eating porridge with savory seasonings instead of milk and sugar.

As I mentioned elsewhere in this thread, Ranma 1/2 may be the cause of me trying okonomiyaki.
