I've not noticed this at all. Western media absolutely loves romance involving girls dying. I hate the trope in general because I hate anything with forced sentimentality, and plenty of "main stream" fans eat it up, too. But I guess those things are less likely to have fandoms so maybe that's why it seems skewed to you?

Edgar Allan Poe said "the death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world. " So it's at least been a thing in western media in the past.

na

This. I remember back in the day when everyone I knew was raving about A Walk to Remember and said it was one of the best movies ever. When I eventually gave in and watched it, it was...just not very good. I mean, sure, I cried while watching it and was briefly tricked into thinking that it was good but when I actually really, really thought about the movie later I realized that it kind of sucked. Unfortunately, a lot of people believe that a movie (or whatever) is automatically high quality just because it made them sad.

It doesn't even have to be a woman though (but it does help if there is one and there's a romantic aspect). People fucking love movies when kids die tragically

Argh, A Walk to Remember was exactly the kind of movie I hate.
