Many sushi places often list what is in a roll, so I'd recommend getting a basic food you like (like shrimp? get a shrimp dish, like salmon, get that) and trying it out.

I'd try a place that has a fairly large menu, because you're more likely to find something you like if you're picky. Most japanese places have chicken teriyaki and shrimp tempura, which are the big "I'm scared to eat anything else" meals when people don't eat japanese much (they are also delicious.) Maybe try a very basic dish and then order a small roll that is a bit more adventerous on the side?

Going with friends helps too, sometimes they can steer you wrong but you can also try their dishes at no additional cost to you.
