I try out new restaurants all the time, and the only question I can answer here is the one about what to order. For that, I read Yelp reviews.

Though... have you ever tried Ethiopian food (if it's available in your area)? There isn't much in the way of options: the only decision you really make is what kind(s) of meat you want to go on your injera. Everyone I've ever taken has loved it, so it seems like an adventurous yet safe place to start.

My small town doesn't have anything, but I'll be going to the largest city around. Hopefully they have some. I'll check Yelp to find out!

I read one of your comments from below about your comfort level. Some other cuisines that are very beginner friendly: Thai, Vietnamese, Korean. I've never met anyone who hated pho, I'd make it myself and feed it to you to prove it :)
