Random question, because this just came up in a conversation I'm having.

Say you're in an established relationship. You love the person you're in the relationship with, and you know they love you, too. You seem to fit together perfectly and you feel lucky to have them in your life. All is well.

Then, one day, you find out that you're the Love Interest to their Player Character. They confess they've been using save states and saving/reloading to get around significant points with the most positive relationship points with you. They've been doing this ever since you met.

What would you do?

Aaaahahaha that is way more dedication than I would ever expect from my SO. On the other hand that is exactly a thing she would do.

I would laugh heartily and call her a jerk.

Feel a little cheated, because that means we've had problems and they've been manipulating their way around them.

Ask them to stop doing it, re-evaluate the relationship. Yeah, there might be genuine love, but it's based on a lie, your favorite memories would be fabricated.

If I genuinely loved them, possibly give them another chance to give it a go without cheating. But if I'd find out the did it a second time I'd almost surely end it.

That being said, I have an exceptionally low tolerance for feeling manipulated.

As I'm not a gamer I'm confused.

A save state is more or less being able to "save" at any point in time. If you quit the game and reload that save, you go back to where you saved from and all the actions you took are erased.

Say you're about to get into a serious discussion with your SO. You save beforehand and try answering a certain way. They react badly, so you quit the game, reload the save, and start again from before the conversation happened, choosing different responses this time. Rinse and repeat until you get a reaction you want. Save. Respond some way to the next question. Don't like that response? Quit and reload until you get one you want. Rinse and repeat.

You can theoretically always choose the path with the most positive responses.

IDK, it means they care enough about me to figure out what makes me happy (even if it's through trial and error).

Like I'm assuming they're one of those cautious gamers that saves a lot, so really they'd only be rewriting a single important conversation at a time. And since they have to operate by dating sim rules, they're really only changing their own responses/actions to things, not anyone else's.

I also assume by this level of dedication that they're learning from all the fuckups they've made.

In a strange way I would be flattered, as this means that he cares about how I feel about him. On the other hand I would be offended that he had been "manipulating" me in that manner. I use quotation marks, as I'm not sure if it's really manipulation to just reload a save state if the previous event never *really* happened?

Would I, as a character/the LI, know that the PC is in fact the PC and that someone on the other side of a screen is controlling the events in my life and how they turn out? That brings another dimension to it, as in LI's eyes PC and the Player suddenly turns out to be sort of a god? Would I know I was part of a game? Or would PC suddenly just declare it out of nowhere, because if my BF suddenly said he was using save points I would just think he was high on something.

I'm just going to say that this sounds so much like a subplot in Doors of Death and Life.

The first question that needs to be asked is whether, if I broke up with them because of this, they'd load a save and not tell me. If so, things get a lot thornier. If not, I'd probably just break up.

I'd give them props for letting me know! And all their effort! But I'd then have no idea who they are, besides "someone that CAN be what I like, but probably isn't normally," which is what matters.

If there were no saves, and they were making decisions for my sake and I could see them do it, that'd be one thing! Like "don't burn down that orphanage, dude. That would make me sad." "Okay, I won't burn down the orphanage, but I totally would have if it weren't for you!!" Then at least I know they're someone who would be burning down orphanages on their own.

But with the savestate person, I have no idea what their regular responses would be, and they have no way to prove to me which ones were or weren't real. Anyone could not burn down an orphanage, but "I didn't burn down an orphanage" doesn't tell me anything about you as a person other than that you're NOT a monster CURRENTLY (but you MIGHT be if it weren't for your shipping goals, who knows?).

I could understand them wanting to use savestates! The problem is I could understand a whole lot of people wanting to use savestates for a whole lot of reasons, not all of them good, and I can't tell/there's no way to prove which one the PC is.

Right up until the PC goes back to the point before they told me. I'll enjoy it while I can.

What you need to do is pretend to be okay with it until the next reasonable save which will hopefully overwrite the one where they told you. The idea is to try and manipulate the player into not being able to go back and "untell" and then you're scot-free at least in terms of self-awareness...

I'd be ok with it. So many relationships are lost due to innocuous mistakes/badly-timed events that if I'm happy with them I wouldn't miss the missed opportunities, and hey, they chose me.

Then I'd grab him by the shoulders and ask him to let me in on it because then we're going to RULE THE WORLD. ...or at least earn ourselves a comfortable life.

This, of course, opens up a lot of questions about what the limitations of those saves are-- whether anyone else can do it, whether the people who can't do it can sense when something is unmade, and what carries over from save to save.

Ultimately, this WOULD put our relationship to the test, and depending on how much I can control or how we really match, it may end it/have repercussion for us and the rest of our immediate environment. But I'd be ok with it initially.
