Hope you're still tracking this--upthread you said you want to make a script for your interactions with the waiter. My advice would be to pick some kind of off-peak time like between 1-4PM (so you can't psych yourself out about bothering them), and then say something to the effect of the following: "Hi, I've never eaten [name of cuisine] before, can you recommend me something with [ingredient]?" If you need to specify things you absolutely cannot stand, desired level of spiciness, or maximum price, you can add that in there as well. I guarantee that the server probably will be able to pick something that, at the very least, they like.

I agree with whoever said to go out with friends or family, it makes eating a lot more fun than just eating alone plus you can try some extra things!

Sushi is, sadly, not a beginner food unless you're already okay with the idea of eating raw fish (in which case, absolutely do sushi it is fantastic). If you do end up there, I would say maybe don't try one of the big complicated rolls, and instead ask for some chef's choice of nigiri, which is just raw fish laid over rice. Tuna, salmon, and sweet egg are personal favorites. I find it easier to try new things when I consciously limit the ingredients so I don't have to worry about not liking one component and then thinking I don't like the rest of the parts of the dish.

Mexican food is surprisingly beginner friendly and also completely delicious. It is pretty much impossible to not find anything you want to eat at a Mexican place. Also, since most of the time they are making everything fresh, you can definitely ask them to do things like take take out all tomatoes or use black beans instead of pinto or whatever if you've got a problem with something on the menu.

If you would like to try something new at your local Chinese place, try either the Mapo Tofu if you're okay with spicy and the texture of tofu, potstickers (my preference is for pork but most places will also serve chicken or veggie), Chicken or Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (the eggplant is AMAZING like 90% of the time, and I cannot stand eggplant otherwise), or Pork with Bamboo Shoots. Make sure you tell the server how spicy you want something, and err on the side of caution if you haven't had a specific dish before.

Thank you for the advice about what to ask them!

Well, considering my limited interaction with other cuisines, most everything is new. But I have had mexican (I live in the South West). Some other suggestions on here sound good (Japanese, Thai, etc).

Everyone who likes sushi has, at some point, tried it as a beginner. There are plenty of options that do not include raw fish and lots of sushi bars (especially those in the U.S.) often carry a long list of rolls that contain cooked ingredients. Lots of my relatives love sushi, but wouldn't touch raw fish with a ten foot pole.
