Image: A publicity picture of Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating) from Star Trek: Enterprise.

Text: Malcolm was my favorite character in Enterprise from the start. So I was annoyed that he got so few "solo" episodes; he deserved more attention than that.

Then I found the fandom, and discovered he's the most popular character...but only because he's the fandom bicycle.

Now I feel like an ungrateful hypocrite for simultaneously feeling like he didn't get enough love and not enjoying the love he DOES get.

(And yes, I would tap that like a maple tree.)

Really not liking having the transcript be the first post (at least when secrets are very texty). It won't collapse, will it?

Better to have them all on page 2, after the "games" thread where they are unobtrusive (cue Secret #7 syndrome attack).

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I think you're doing it right, anon. I know I want Malcolm to be cool in his own right, not just Trip's slash boyfriend.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought it was weird how ignored he was in the show. But I don't think enterprise did a great job giving attention to a lot of their cast. Probably part of the reason I lost interest.

Remember the black guy, he'd been in space? I can't even remember his name, he got less lines than Uhura did in the '60s show. Real progressive there B&B.

I liked Malcolm too, never knew whether fandom liked him though as I never went looking but I don't know if I'm surprised or not that he's the fandom bicycle.

Wow, I forgot how epic his hair was! He has one fantastic head of hair.

I have to admit to being surprised he's the fandom bicycle though, as I assumed Trip would be. (I don't have one for this show as I was never THAT involved in it, but if I was going to it would be Hoshi or Archer.)

I mean, just going off Ao3 here...

Malcolm's in 888 out of 1591 stories, which is more than any of the other Enterprise characters get.

The big pairings are Reed/Archer, Reed/Tucker, Reed/Hoshi, and Reed/Hayes, but I've definitely seen him paired with others, as this site demonstrates: http://www.geocities.ws/reedsarmory/RA_pairings.html

And then there's this fic, where he literally has sex with every single crewman to relieve tension on board the ship: http://www.geocities.ws/reedsarmory/Stories/Qzee/Q_A_Little_Stress_Relief.html

I'm pretty sure all that qualifies him for Bicycle status.

It just means that different writers prefer different pairings? Why is it a negative thing?
And, say, Archer is paired with T'Pol, Trip, Reed and Shran (the last one by few, tho).
Oh yes, Reed/Hayes, that's one fierce ship.

Okay, I fudged up my wording here because all I meant was, “If I was going to have a fandom bicycle it would be", not that I believe he isn't the most popular character to be paired up. Sorry!

I need to finish this show.

I remember liking Trip, but I have no memory of this guy. I think I just need to start from the beginning again.

I really enjoyed Enterprise, even if most people think it's the worst of the "modern" Treks. I'd definitely encourage you to finish it, though maybe skip the last episode.

Reed won't be hard to spot on a second watch-through. He's the only one with a British accent and an obsession with weapons/explosions.

I write Malcolm fics, not because he is the easiest to pair -I don't pair-, but because he is the only competent character on the show. The episodes always seemed to be the rest fucking up, and then Malcolm coming in and saving their asses.

Please share these fics with me. I really want badass, competent Malcolm fic.

(True story; that bit when he took command in "The Andorian Incident"? I started fanning myself. That authoritative tone, man...)

Re: OP

Seconding the request to please share the fics. I love Malcolm, but find it so hard to find fics where he's well written and not shipped with anyone.

And I agree with the poster above, that authoritative tone did make me feel all tingly inside ;-)

On a side-note, I met Dominic at a con last year, and I have to say he does age well. Really well. ;-) And he's a really funny guy. His autograph station was right next to Connor's too, which led to some funny dialogue between them, even though Connor was so obviously hungover. Fun times. :D

Reed is my favorite on the show because he has a lot of the character traits I enjoy and his level of competency. It helps that Keating did a really good job with shaky development and scripts.

I loved Malcolm, ever since his "Keep your shirt on, lieutenant" Trip impression/introduction.

Sadly, other than that line, my biggest memory of regarding him is some crazy headcanon that I don't even really remember, just that it had something to do with finding out in his birthday episode that he didn't like fish after the "stranded in a shuttle with Trip" episode where he chose to eat a fish meal, and, unfortunately for you, I'm sure it all had something to do with his secret love for Trip.

I should rewatch/finish this show. But I'm right in the middle of TNG, so it'll have to wait.

I don't remember Reed being a fandom bicycle, i.e. a stand in for an OC and self insert. Is it a recent development? An activity boom in ENT fandom? *lol*
He's quite popular though, isn't he? He's got a few episodes, like the one with the mine, and the one where he's stuck in a shuttle and I vaguely remember there's another episode revolving around him. Hoshi got only one ep. -/
Anyway, great to see an ENT secret.

A fandom bicycle isn't the same thing as a self-insert. It's someone who's shipped with everyone.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
That they often end up as a self-insert is completely incidental.

See upthread for my evidence supporting Reed's bicycleness.

He was my favorite too.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
He actually seemed to care about doing his job and doing it right. That show was a mess though - mavericks everywhere, alien species that have never been mentioned, stupid actions excused as inexperience or ignorance (though, really, not the only show with this problem), etc.
