The reason I hate popular pairings is that I'm jealous that nothing I ship has ever been that popular.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Understandable to some extent.

It sucks when you can't find anything for your pair. I know shipping Zuko/Mai, I was so disappointed at how many Zuko/Katara fanfics there were. I understood WHY it happened -- Zuko was the most popular male and Katara was the most popular female -- but you still felt like you were missing out.

As long as you're not harassing anyone, though, I don't see anything wrong with admitting that you're jealous/hate a pair for being more popular.

I once hated a pairing, in my last fandom, not just because they were more popular than my OTP but because I just didn't get it.

It didn't help that my OTP had a lot of canon interaction while my hated pairing, who also contained one of my OTP's members, had no interaction at all in canon. And my hated pairing turned up all the time even in fics that weren't about them or labeled for it. They were one of those 'pair the spares' pairings I particularly hate, but somehow they'd got a firm hold on fanon.

There was nothing wrong in theory with admitting my hate to this pairing. I just couldn't bring myself ever to do so.

Some people get crazy angry at even a hint that their favoured pairing might not be to everyone's taste. I kept that hate inside me for a year, which wasn't healthy either.

Ugh. That's happened for me before. There are some pairings I can understand why they are popular, but some get so huge for no reason while ships with more basis are ignored.

I usually don't hate on ships but the only time I feel frustrated is when a ship is popular and I can't understand why.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
usually I like my little ships, but I managed to hop on the big one for my newest fandom. There's like, one person that seems to be loudly against it and I can understand their frustration, they ship one half with someone else, but when they're tagging "I just saw x ship and threw up in my mouth" and "I'm hoarding x username so you can't use it" I'm like ????? why are you trying to start wank on purpose?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
That has happened in my fandom too. Most of my ships until now have been rare pairs, but for the first time I ship the fandoms biggest ship and it's a lot of peoples default ship too. There are a few haters who really stand out and they are ridiculously confrontational about it. Even worst is that this fandom doesn't have any ship wars to begin, so they are just trying to start drama on their own.

I know it's frustrating when your ship doesn't get as much as another ship you don't like, but it's pretty childish to try and pick fights about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I was just searching the tags of my popular ship the other day and I occasionally run across the post that says the popular ship is nothing special and their rare pair deserves to take it's place.

This popular ship in particular has a lot of canon basis and their rare pair doesn't have much interaction and the stuff it does have wasn't particularly significant enough for lots of people to jump onboard. Yet, they act so offended why their ship is not as popular.

Everyone is free to ship what they want, but I don't understand why people think their specific tastes need to be everyones tastes and then act so hostile towards the popular ship, even when said popular ship has an understandable reason for being popular.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I get why this would be irritating in that there'd be a lack of fanworks or discussion about your rarer pairing.

But OP, every single juggernaut pairing I've shipped (ever, over enough years of shipping to think this isn't just a case of bad luck with fandoms) has come with a fuckton of wank and drama and hatefulness. None of my rarer pairs ever has.

So I guess it depends what you want out of it, but I'd take the more laid back, wank-free pleasure of a smaller ship over the rabid, toxic batshittery of the massively popular pairings any way, even if that meant there was less for me to read/look at.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of disagree.

I've been in some pretty wanky juggernaut pairings but that kind of stuff is easy to ignore. Plus, shipping a rare pair is no guarantee not to get wank (especially if it's canon).

I'll take massive amounts of fic/art and the heaping gallons of wank over having neither anyday.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. I mean, these days I still read a lot of fic but talk to almost no one in any of my fandoms, so wank will affect me not at all, while the lack of fanwork obviously will.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Like I said, it depends what you get out of it.

When you do ship a juggernaut pairing to the extent that it's virtually the only thing that shows up under any searches for the source material, and when the wanky shippers are many and voiciferous, then for me that isn't easy to ignore. And it completely ruins my experience, and no quantity of fanwork can make up for that. YMMV, and clearly does.

That's true. There are some rare pairs that still get bombarded with hate and negativity. My last couple of ships were small but they did not escape drama.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a fan of juggernaut pairings is just so nice. Everything's done for you, you barely have to look. I never appreciated how easy I had it until I started shipping a rare pair hardcore and had to write all the fics on my own.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
idk I kind of feel like if all your ships always in forever have never had any popularity, then I feel like either you must only hang in fandoms that don't have much fan activity to start with, or you only ship really minor characters, or characters that almost never interact. Sure, occasionally a really awesome pairing slips through fandom for whatever reason, but in my experience in any decent sized fandom, most main characters will always get shipped with the other main characters, especially if they've actually interacted in the series.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that unusual. "Never been that popular" doesn't mean it doesn't have any popularity or that no one at all besides OP ships it. It just means that it never got the traction that juggernaut ships did, and resultantly has less selection wrt fic and art and meta.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I think the activity level is possibly a factor. When my last fandom was at it's height, one of the most popular ships was for a pair that hadn't even interacted in canon.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
This is so common! And so frustrating!

Especially if you ship one of the members of this pairing elsewhere, with someone they actually did have a lot of canon interaction with, yet it remains a rarepair next to the other.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
NA

This isn't the case with me and anime fandoms. Almost all of my anime pairings are rare. (Mainly sports) They all include the main character. And the other person in the pairing is on the same team (and has a significant role), and they interact enough.

But still rare because it's not the best friend pairing or the 'main partnerships'.

And in one case, my ship is even the rival one but it still gets pretty ignored in western fandom.

I consider myself very lucky to (for the most part) have such popular taste. I'm predictable, not gonna deny that, but all the same I enjoy being in fandoms where I can easily find fic I like; I've been in fandoms where my ship wasn't the favorite, but had a much harder time being invested when it was difficult finding people who shared my interest.

(Different, but in Inception fandom I started out shipping Arthur/Eames, but by the time I left I never wanted to see it again. That kind of thing doesn't typically happen to me, but it did and once I moved on to Cobb/Arthur and Eames/Cobb I didn't last long; the amount of Arthur/Eames in that fandom was astronomical, haha, and participating in the Kink Meme stopped being fun for me.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Understandable.

Unless you're one of those people who whine at the shippers/writers/artists of the popular thing that it's not fair that there's so much more of the popular ship so they need to write/draw your pair instead of their own OTP all the time and generally making them feel guilty and uncomfortable, then there's nothing wrong with feeling the way you feel.

ahaha...I know that feel

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
That's one reason why I wasn't a fan of Destiel. I like Dean with other people who wasn't Cas or even Sam.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
As long as your not harassing anyone about it, it's normal to feel that way.
I know a lot of popular ships get hated on by people saying the ship is overrated and doesn't deserve all the art/fic. Then you've got some smartasses saying instead of shipping [popular ship] you should ship [unpopular ship] instead.

I understand the frustration, but as someone who has had both unpopular and popular ships it's best to just leave each other alone and not let that frustration turn into a shipwar.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
When I shipped the most popular pairing by a mile in one of my fandoms, there was literally nothing worse than spending days or even weeks sometimes working on a fic for them that you're really proud of and excited to share, only for some passive-aggressive asshole to come along with "It would have been better if you'd written this for Other Ship I Prefer instead, because Pairing You Like And I Don't always gets so much anyway."

Like... if I wanted to write that pairing I'd have fucking written that pairing.
