I started reading these series fairly recently, after watching people on Tumblr squeal about MTMTE for months. I actually like them okay so far, but I’m having a very hard time getting attached to the characters of MTMTE because I know what terrible things happen to them. Nobody’s talking about the plot developments in RID, so I can get attached to the characters without knowing what happens down the road. I’m actually liking it better because it’s less popular. S!B: This sounds incredibly hipstery.

Eh, I don't think it sounds hipster at all. It is hard to avoid spoilers when something is popular and/or well talked about in the fandom you're in. I love MTMTE and think it is better than RID (not that RID is a slouch in its department or anything), but I do notice the lack of RID stuff on Tumblr and whatnot. Sometimes a story can be ruined (especially if it's something recent) if you already know what's going to happen and how an individual deals with it varies. Usually I try my best to warn folks when I spoil something, but I get how hard that can be at times even with the best intent.

They're pretty different though, both in tone and relevance. MTMTE is very character driven, and it has a huge (rotating?) ensemble cast to work with endlessly, which makes for more emotional pull. However, its arcs are rather self contained in that it doesn't effect RID or anything in the "main" continuity (perfect for folk who don't want to read the other titles). Outside of their official mission for being there, it's really its own space opera about a bunch of robots failing and facing in space, and dragged into events like Dark Cybertron and Combiner Wars out of necessity like attending a family dinner. It's the more accessible of the two imo, especially for new fans.

RID is fun too, don't get me wrong, but when I read it I expect overarching plots and continuity that actually effect every book. I get action, politics, Earth, and more Decepticon (and NAIL technically) pov.

I definitely have more investment in MTMTE's cast, particularly since I got to binge read it recently, but atm I'm more interested in what'll be happening in RID.
