I went back to check out an old fandom of mine and was super hyped to see it wasn't dead!!

- Too bad all the fanfic and meta that's written now is super dull and mediocre and it doesn’t seem likely to change since all current authors seem to be self-congratulating, circle-jerk BFFs...
I know this is petty and I feel ungrateful. :(

B!S It’s just weird to me when old fanfic is better than new stuff...

Kinda like Fandom!Secrets then really. We're in the circle jerk where you cannot criticize Case, and you cannot suggest that anything is being done wrong, and once everyone is done dogpiling you, they'll all post saying how well everyone else is doing at it. Except it is totally bullshit, because Riker's beard secrets are the best and fuck you all!

But yeah, when your fandom reaches the point that everyone all agrees with everyone else and you end up driving people who disagree away, it is pretty much doomed.

Why do I have the feeling that it isn't actually true that this fandom now only consists of BFFs? Oh right, I know. Because it's impossible. How can you have a fandom where literally everybody currently writing fic is a BFF?

I'm sorry you're disappointed, OP, but it's clear you've only scratched the surface of the fandom right now. There's a lot more going on. You're only seeing the surface. That would also explain why you used the word circlejerking. You're no longer part of that fandom, and it hurts to see others having fun.

Another option is that you're really exaggerating.

Y'know, I felt this way when I went back to an old fandom.

But I stuck it out, and realized that the current writers weren't one homogenous being. There were divides, usually based on the "version" of the characters and kind of stories they like to write.

I ended up writing stuff myself since none of the main groups suited me and my taste, and gained my own little following, though I'm far from a BNF. It was and is actually quite rewarding.

So keep reaching for those grapes if you still have the energy, OP. You never know.

FS is the place where I encounter the term 'circle jerk' quiet often. I think it's less circle jerk and more old fandom friends who know each other and like each other's fics.

Jealousy is bad for the soul, OP, and the grass was surely greener in your day. Sorry, but this secret comes across like this to me.

Is it the Inception fandom? It's had a revival recently but seems to kept alive by mainly the same three or so authors. Who all seem to love each others work. I quite like their work but it feels all very same-y and would love more variety in new fic.
