Whenever I see human!Smaug mentioned in fic or discussion, I always imagine him looking like Darkness in Legend. (Not all that human, I know, but even so.) Sorry, Benny, but no matter how expressly it's Cumber!Smaug people are going for, it just doesn't work for me.

Yeah, I can never fully anthropomorphize creatures like dragons. My mind keeps them humanoid. I remember a lot of people freaking out about the character designs for My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, and, yeah, they're kind of hideous, but that's about as close to human as I can imagine.

I don't actually see human Smaug that often and when I do it's usually in a modern AU and everyone is so different I have no trouble imagining him as Cumberbatch. He keeps his dragon voice and has red eyes for some reason, but he's def Cumberbatch.

I can't read fic that changes characters' species. It's just too dang weird to me.

Just make them like the Dragons from WoW, humanoid enough to pass, but still have horns, claws, glowy eyes, etc.

On a somewhat related note, I used to like the occasional dragon Sherlock fic, but now they're all Smaug influenced, or straight out Smaug crossovers.

How about a version of Darkness that is based on Cumberbatch's face instead of Tim Curry's? Best of both worlds, with BC and the inhuman red skin and horns!
