I'm kind of confused as to how the two parts of this secret are related? OP doesn't like Brit/Ameripicking, and so ... what translations are inferior? I'm a little lost.

I was a bit confused as well - my impression is that they're arguing some books translate between the two. Which is true, but that also isn't always preferable.

I'm wondering if they mean things like the HP series, which uses British terms even for American audiences? And that some people would view it as less preferable because it doesn't change? I don't know.

Actually the US versions are partly "translated", to change some of the more obscure cultural and dialectical referents peculiar to UK English.

The Canadian versions, ironically enough, are taken straight from the unexpurgated UK texts.

I agree. This secret doesn't make a particle of sense.

If you translate a Russian novel set in Russia into English, for instance, you don't suddenly also 'translate' the characters as going into American/UK stores or reading American/UK magazines. That's all Britpicking/Ameripicking is, trying to catch those kind of stupid, obvious mistakes that can throw readers out of the story.
