Actually, Groot is speaking. He has a full vocabulary, that among his people (and those who bother to learn it) is advanced and highly expressive - but to the untrained person, everything he says just sounds like the phrase "Iamgroot".

I guess it was ambiguous as to whether or not the movie was doing that, though Rocket Raccoon certainly understands him. Could've been cutesy, like you "know" what your pet is saying, but also could've been referencing his comic book characterization where he's literally speaking words.

Sorry that's it's comic canon?

ayrt

in the show Ugly Americans, there is a race of terrible Birdmen that have a similar language, except with permutations of the phrase "suck my balls"

This reminds me of a cruder version of "the secret world of og".

Og og og. Og. Og og og og.

Or the Librarian in Discworld. He mostly speaks "Ook ook ook!" and the occasional "Eek!".

+1

I'm dead sure that GotG 2 will feature the whole gang completely understanding what Groot is saying. It will be a running gag with them laughing at his jokes and nodding at him when he says something sage and clever.

But I'll note this down as the other autist interpretation of the GotG movie, the first one being Drax and his deficiency with metaphors.
