I have a feeling it will make me wish I had someone like that too. And also that I had the opportunity to BE someone like that (without the part where the object of my affection was in any sort of pain/danger as it appears she is)

Well, the show makes it seems like she failed until it turn out she did die there and she didn't even notice.

And he tried and despite failing, he (I may be remembering this wrong, it's been years since I watched it) helped her to want to be alive/not try to kill herself again (before she discovered she was dead).
