Nobody's rights are being infringed upon by this. Companies are allowed set policies on their employees regarding behavior and dress.

...I must be old, when I started working it was standard dress code to not wear ANY branded clothing/t-shirts with slogans or sayings on them.

Not a mandatory thing anywhere I've worked and I'm older than you - and my mother wore trousers to work in the 70s. You just had shitty, conservative workplaces.
