The cover is reference to the Batman storyline, "The Killing Joke." It's where the Joker attacked Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) in her own home and paralyzed her from the waist down. It's one of the most violent and brutal Batman story lines.

Now here's the thing, this cover was supposed to be for the current run of Batgirl. Unlike The Killing Joke, the current Batgirl comic is pretty much a fun, fluff action comic. It's campy and cheesy. It's more akin to Adam West's Batman than to Christopher Nolan.

And that's why many people who are not on tumblr have a problem with this cover. The cover doesn't match the comic. The artist made an homage to a violent, depressing, ultra-dark storyline and slapped it on an upbeat comic.

Yeah....it doesn't fit. Like checking out a movie because the movie poster had the alien Predator on it and discovering the movie is actually Lilo & Stitch.

But it's just a variant cover. Not the "real" cover. I thought variant covers were just for collectors and stuff, or for superfans. I can see how it might not reflect the current run, and that makes sense, but it's still part of the Batgirl character's story. I mean, it's not totally random, and it's celebrating that anniversary, too, right? It's basically just showcasing official Batgirl art, no?

I think the issue is supposed to be a tie-in with the current arc that's going down in the Batman flagship title, hence the cover.
