The good kind of angst

(Anonymous) 2015-03-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people just won't touch angsty fic (or any such media) with a ten-foot pole, and I used to think I was one of them until I realized -- I was probably reading the wrong kind of angst. I'm actually okay, really okay with angsty material that has a core of... love? Like, horrible things happen but at no point does the story make you question that these characters love one another, will do anything to protect one another no matter what stands in their way. If I can have that, everything else is golden, up to and including tragic endings.

On the other hand, I can't stand stupid miscommunication, characters treating each other horribly for no apparent or just really contrived reasons, and stories that pointlessly hurt you for the hell of it.

What hurst so good for you, FS?

I LOVE angst. But only as long as there is comfort at the end. I can't do downer endings. :(

'angst with a happy ending' IS a good tag.

I'm the same, like sometimes I can read unhappy ending because I want to make myself sad that day or something, but most of the time? I want it to end happy.

The character can go through shit, but so long as it ends happy I'm good.

Yeah. I completely agree.

I think one way to put it would be that I like angst that comes from situations that are external to the characters I care about - something happens to them, they're forced to make a choice, whatever - rather than where it's internal to the characters or the relationship. Or if it's internal only if it's easily resolved and then you get to that sweet, sweet comfort.

Yes, exactly! I'd have added that distinction between external and internal factors if I wasn't worried about the length of my post. I think I may just about be done with 'gritty' dramas where people's fundamental flaws lead to their downfall, at least in fanfiction. Too close to the bone, probably.

I'm more entertained by angst, tbh, but it can't just be relentless sadness and horrible shit continuously. There has to be a little levity sprinkled in, or a glimmer or hope or something.

I always thing of this quote from "Wizard People, Dear Reader," regarding my tastes when it comes to angst: "He imagines that that manhorse would come in here and take him away and they could catch a movie or make dinner or something. Something fun for a change" If it gets the point where I'm like Wizard People, Dear Reader'ing it and wishing SOMETHING GOOD COULD FUCKING HAPPEN FOR A CHANGE, then your angst has probably gone to far. BUT, depending on the character, I might also enjoy seeing them suffer, so. It really depends.

The best example of really good angst for me right now would be Antonius Block from The Seventh Seal. The man is stewing in 10 years of horrific crusade experiences, physically, spiritually, and mentally crushed, he's moments away from death at any moment, and his final question is, in the end, "Did I matter?"

This is aided by the fact he looks like the walking wounded, and his monologues are accompanied by a beaten, glassy-eyed stare.

Mmm. My kind of angst.
