Possibly pinca? Or gubana?

She definitely made a gubana or other type of nut roll (also a childhood memory, but way more "definable" a craving), but this was a flavor closer to a challah, but huger-- tall, yeasty, and very fluffy. And no, not a paska/kulich or some kind of pandoro, either. I promise; it has been researched and attempted several times by my aunt/uncles, to no avail.

To our knowledge, it seems to have been either just her tradition, or something very specifically regional. She was born in what was then the Austro-Hungarian empire; then it was briefly held by Italy; then it was the Free State of Fiume (!), which is when she emigrated; then it was Yugoslavia; and now it's Rijeka, Croatia. Complicated!

I'm sorry--I should have known that someone who makes hamantaschen with four different kinds of dough would have researched this pretty exhaustively.

My grandmother used the same rich eggy dough for vasilopita, and again for easter tsoureki, plus a walnut roll, similar to potica or gubana, every Christmas (and often for other holidays as well). And there were kipferl and finikia--you can see my grandmother was pretty cosmopolitan in her cooking. She never wrote her recipes down, but luckily one of my cousins did! The thought of not being able to recreate that deliciousness depresses me.
