I always saw that as Groot being eager to please Rocket and sometimes getting it wrong. We know how much Groot meant to Rocket later when we see Rocket cry because he thinks he's dead. (Evidenced by his surprised look when baby!Groot stretched and yawned right before the Milano took off.)
