I don't understand this.

I have literally never met a slash fan that doesn't support lgbt rights.

Ever.

The only ones I can think of are conservative men who watch lesbian porn.

But slash fangirls who think it's hot? They are overwhelmingly pro-lgbt. I've literally never seen an exception to this.

I do know of het writers who refuse to write slash and think homosexuality is wrong (on religious grounds) but they're not writing slash (obviously).

There are different levels of being "pro-lgbt," and having an extensive porn collection on your hard drive doesn't mean you won't pull the same old homophobic stereotypes in private when it really matters.

It's not enough to believe that gays should have rights and vote accordingly in elections. Slash fans need to be professional activists who spend every waking minute making phone calls, stomping territory, passing out flyers and protesting on the steps of the Capitol or they're just as evil as the bigots.

And it goes without saying that slash fans who actually do these things are attention-seekers who are speaking over LGBT voices and should sit the hell down.

t's not enough to believe that gays should have rights and vote accordingly in elections.

No, it's not enough if the anti-gay slurs pop out of your mouth at the first argument, or you put pressure on your bi partners to have threesomes for your benefit because obviously we can't be fulfilled unless we're swinging or on the down low. But, if you're going to turn into that kind of abusive shit, canvassing neighborhoods isn't enough either.

Wow, projecting much?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-03-27 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's experience, one that I've found generally shared among bis in their relationships with straights.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
You regularly date slash fangirls?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
So yes, you are projecting, and applying limited anecdotal experience to everyone in a large group. Good to know.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-03-27 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, applying anecdotal experience to straight people who pull that kind of prejudice in private. No more than saying "Slash fans need to be professional activists..."

I've seen a few slash fans who are both pro lgbt and "eww lesbians". I mentally slot them in the same box as guys who like lesbian porn but won't support m/m lgbt.

That's when I think ops claim can come In

Unfortunately, I've met several. They tend to think the gays are wrong because they've been taught so by religion. At the same time, they find slash/yaoi hot and are drawn to it. The more intelligent ones are conflicted by this, which shows there's hope for them to learn that gay people aren't actually all going to hell.

Some of the less intelligent ones sometimes flounce out of slash fandoms, claiming they've "outgrown" it and we're all "disgusting" which is always funny.

I have come across a few slash-fans who were surprisingly homophobic(they were okay with slash in fiction but gay people being allowed to marry? Ewww we can't have that). Which is really a baffling mind-set to have, but then I guess it's the same as the homophobic straight dudes who wank-off to lesbian porn.

For the most part though the majority of slash fans I've interacted with are pro-LGBT rights, it's just not a guarantee that this is always the case.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I've met quite a few. The attitude's less prevalent than it used to be, but there's a not insignificant chunk of slash fandom that's essentially equivalent to the lesbian-porn-watching conservatives.

And then there's the set that don't oppose gay rights, but do freak out at the thought of being in the same room as a lesbian.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's less about slash fans not supporting gay rights , and more about the ones who use gay rights as a pretext to disguise their shipping as social justice.

Queer people won't lose their sleep if your favorite male characters are still dating women only instead of that male character you ship them with.
Maybe, just maybe, they only want more queer characters who are just like that and the fans don't need to try to convince the writers.

joining in with others to say yes homophobic, bigoted slash fans certainly exist and they say things like, "it's okay in fiction, but real life gays aren't right." they view slash as a kink they're into, but is wrong in actuality. I can tell you from experience that a girl I thought would be pro-lgbt because of her hoards of slash and yaoi attempted to trick me into coming to her church group to "fix" me when she figured out I was gay for real.

there's a very large segment of the asian-american community who are raised christian who are simultaneously 1) into anime and 2) conservative, which tends to brew this particular viewpoint, at least in my neighborhood.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-27 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's mostly strictly het shippers I see 'homosexuality is wrong' mindset.
Slash shippers are prone to be more tolerant to real life issues at least.

I never saw why that is a bad thing. At least blind love is better than blind hate. They always spread awareness for real issues which might otherwise have been overlooked.

Would it be better if they just ignored it all together? Just because someone ships slash doesn't mean they can't also be informed or want to be informed.
