Guess what the #1 dog for bites in Spain is?

The cocker spaniel.

It's a population problem, not a breed problem. In other news, those bite lists only track dog bites that have been related to medical records. If you were to ask veterinarians what the worst dog breeds for bites actually are, they'd say Chihuahuhas and Pomeranians- it just so happens that if you get bitten by one of those little froo-froo doggies you're unlikely to need to go to the ER.

I mean, I hate to bring rationality into an argument that's essentially bred from fear mongering, but you're just so off base here.

If chihuahas bite more frequently but harmlessly, while pit bulls (or whatever breed) bite more rarely but harmfully, it seems reasonable to regard pit bulls as more threatening

not because they've been bred for aggression but because they've been bred for being good as fuck at biting

And yet, most of them don't bite. Weird.

It's almost like proper socialization and training is more important than a dog's breed.

yeah i agree

but, again, if you have two improperly trained dogs, and one of them will inconvenience you and one of them will break your leg...

Sure, that's a fair point, but characterizing a single breed as a dangerous weapon is just kind of ludicrous when there are plenty of other breeds that can (and do) kill people.

If you look at the list of breeds that have killed the most people, pit bulls aren't even the top of the list.

(DA)

Yeah. There are even records of Retrievers killing people.

If anything, that proves that the issue is not the breed, but the strength and size of the dog along with their lack of training.

Yeah, and I am MORE worried about the dog that is sending me to the ER.

Well in that case you should be more worried about Chow-chows, Huskies, German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and Dalmatians.

Pit bulls were responsible for more fatalities in the US than any of those other breeds.

Already made the international breeds comment a bit upthread. You can't judge bites by population when the USA has more Amstaff and related breeds than any other country.

Because "killing people" or "biting people" are not breed traits, nor are they automatic or instinctive. Not for any breed. It just happens more when you get a higher concentration of poorly socialized animals in a single area.

For cocker spaniels, I'd buy it being a breed problem.

I volunteered at a dog rescue for a few years, and the only time I got bit it was by a cocker.
