I haven't been locked out on purpose but when I lived in the dorms at college, I had a sticky door one year. It would be unlocked but still stick in the locked position so it "locked" behind me a couple of times. Thankfully it wasn't at night and there was someone in the greeting area of the dorm with a key.

I ended up always taking a key with me when I left my room, even to get my laundry.
