I think it's because femslash is less popular.
The main argument ('straight slash fans fetishize queer people') is often linked with the argument that straight women seem to favor male characters over the female ones because they fantasize about the opposite sex and it's about them they will write the most. This explains why m/m slash is more popular than femslash and, to a lesser extent, non canon het.
Then there is fandom's misogyny that isn't mutually exclusive but it seems that, whatever it's het or femslash, the female characters get much less love and attention than male ones (or are even hated) and it's not because of the sexism in the source material either because a hot male character seems to be a source of inspiration even when they are mediocre or a badly or underdeveloped character.

I think misogyny does play a part but I would argue that the lack of good female characters and, especially, female-female interaction plays a bigger role.

I think this because when I see media that has women with close relationshps, femmeslash will often predominate.

Xena, Korra, Agent Carter etc. -- the most popular pairings are femmeslash.

Agent carter in particular is notable to me because there are TONS of hot guys to ship (both with each other and Peggy) and yet Peggy/Angie is the most popular.

I think that plays an ENORMOUS role. Lots of shows/movies/books have female characters, but how often are they shown meaningfully interacting with each other?
