I think beating up a human is worse than beating up an animal, but I feel worse *for* the animal because it- generally speaking- is much more helpless than the human. Exactly like how I'd feel worse for the child if someone beat a child up, than if someone beat an adult up.

Yes, this exactly. Not saying it's a moral equivalency, but there is a visceral reaction to someone who deliberately torments weaker creatures. And I don't have a problem with classifying that kind of abusive behavior as reprehensible and deserving of contempt.
