Roger Moore basically said in an interview that James Bond should be "English" English (which has been taken to mean white.) He later claimed that the magazine took his quote out of context to seem like it was referring to Idris Elba but that he was answering a question as to whether James Bond should be English.

Roger Moore was asked in an interview what he thought made a good James Bond actor and he described himself, so the Daily Mail then wrote up that he was a racist white guy and that he he slated Idris Elba as a Bond despite Moore never mentioning skin color or Elba's name.

As it turned out, the original interview didn't even mention Idris even once, not touch on skin color at all. The Daily Mail, in massive shocker, just made that shit up. Basically all he said was that he felt Bond had to be English-English, which he took to mean "looks good in a tan Safari Suit and played by an actor who can raise his eyebrow archly", which is a little vain, but no biggie really. The rest of it was cooked up back at the Fortress of Bullshit or whatever the Daily Mail calls its HQ.

And didn't he say something like, "Bond has been Scottish and Irish but I think he should be played by someone English" or something like that? Which... Elba is English. Really, the Connery fans should be more up in arms.

I know it's not Elba's fault, but using him constantly as an example for *casting a minority actor in a traditionally white role* is starting to make me hate his face.

It is because he has an easy name to spell, unlike -uh, let me google it, Chiwetel Ejiofor. If he had an easy to spell name, everyone would be talking about him instead. Same reason they used to talk about Colin Salmon taking it over as Black-Bond and not the black guy from fifteen years ago with a difficult to spell name that I can't even find on google. It just underlines the necessity of an actor having a name that is easily recognizable to the anglosphere. You can be a little ethnic, especially if you are Asian, but not too ethnic (the bar for "too ethnic" is really low if you are of African extraction too).

For what it's worth, he pretty obviously hates it too. He's stated more than once that he doesn't want to do James Bond because he doesn't want to be known as the "Black Bond".

He should man up, every Bond has been the "something" Bond. Brosnan was the Irish Bond, Connery was the Scottish Bond, Craig is the Blonde Bond, Moore is the English Bond, Niven was the Comedy Bond, Lazenby was the Forgotten Bond, and Dalton was the Franchise Killing Bond.

da. Although I can understand his reservations about wanting to join such a franchise, but when you enter it -- you get a label. "Something" Bond is always going to happen with every new Bond because they have to stand out from the others.

I don't think he's as amazingly versatile as others seem to think. James Bond is a way better idea than others I've seen though.

I've seen people half-joke that part of the reason why he gets fancast so much is that he's gorgeous, and part is that, even on a good day, fandom only knows like four black actors.
