nayrt but...

1) At some point in the 70s, Niven fell down the uber-Libertarian rabbit hole, much like longtime collaborator and fellow author Jerry Pournelle.

2) Oh yeah. Ellison's boob-groping of Connie Willis was huge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlan_Ellison#With_Connie_Willis_at_Hugo_Awards_2006

3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_Fish

Niven's politics are unfortunate but that doesn't stop him from producing interesting work.

Ellison's groping, however... Well, I didn't like him anyway. Dude has his reasons to be mad but he just comes across as a total ass.

Niven's politics infect his work rather badly, even the early stuff. In one early story, he has a character explain the "simple rules" for escaping poverty. This from the man who dedicated one of his books to his grandfather, in gratitude for grandpa making millions in oil and insuring that the author never had to get a day job.

Worse than that, though, he's a perfect example of that engineer mindset that really wants to reduce the world down to mechanistic, solvable problems, and which overlaps to an unfortunate degree with libertarianism. He once wrote the lines "It wasn't a fair fight at all; everyone knows you've had karate training, and karate can defeat any hand weapon except a quarterstaff, and you've had quarterstaff training too."

This guy was considered one of the foremost brains in the field. A man who can, literally, be bullied into submission by the math department of MIT. Not joking; that happened.
