JNT did the best he could. Yes, he could have gone earlier, but it wouldn't have saved the show. Grade was determined to axe it for not having US level production values, but wouldn't countenance equivilant budgets. It was JNT that stopped the show going off air when Tom Baker left the show too, there was a real chance that could've happened. Yes he was a publicity hound, but right then, the show needed one.

I think we can safely say that JNT also had a certain aesthetic that also didn't fit with the idea others had of the show. The Coat wasn't anything to do with budget.

That said if your greatest sin is not agreeing with the bras on the creative direction of the show, who gives a shit?

The coat came because of of edicts from above. Had to be a distinct "costume" (the Beeb had initial plans to get in on the 80s action figure craze), couldn't be "dark" (JNT's first draft had been a darker costume), had to be ready a lot sooner than planned, had to be cheap, had to be done on the quiet too (they were afraid of leaks) so it couldn't be screen tested properly, had to be very visually different from Peter Davison's outfit. By the time all the musts and must nots from above were piled up it is a minor miracle that we got something as sane as the coat.

Hmmmm, must have been misremembering, I thought it was Baker who wanted the dark suit and JNT who was like COLORS

CBaker was on record as describing what he envisioned his Doctor wearing something as something quite similar to what Nine wound up with. But once he was assigned the coat, he went with it and the first two cat pins were custom made in the image of his own cats.

Yeah, toning it down doesn't really help. There's just no way around those clown shoes. There really isn't. Go camp and be done with it.
