Cold salt water is actually great for washing out bloodstains!

Also, women didn't have as many periods as modern women do - later menarche, worse nutrition plus more likely to be pregnant or breastfeeding for long parts of your life meant fewer periods.

I concur with both of these! As to Tolkien, this is probably a genuine worldbuilding issue - it may have simply not occurred to the dude to think about this.

(Alternatively, the inhabitants of Middle Earth don't menstruate. Instead, there are hormonal mechanisms in place that are activated only when an actual fertilization occurs.)

Hmm, hobbits and elves and such could have an estrous cycle.

As long as we're wondering about periods, I always wonder about animals that have menstrual cycles rather than estrous cycles, like chimps and orangutans. Does their fur get all matted with blood or do they have ways of dealing with it? I don't know how good their hygiene is in general beyond knowing the basics of grooming as an indicator of social status.

I assume chimps just get pregnant pretty much immediately. I mean they have nothing to stop them from banging away, and they have a sex drive as high (or higher) than humans. They likely menstruate very rarely.

There's got to be research on this subject...

Elves I might imagine stop menstruating at some point, but the mortal races I find it less likely, withe the shorter the life-span, the less likely it'd be.

I agree with the thought that it simply would not have been something he even thought about, and if he did think about it, well Tolkien's writing has a pile of old-fashioned gender roles, with most of the women not getting involved in adventuring and fighting. Éowyn being the biggest exception, and I;d imagine that if she got her period during the time she was Dernhelm, it would have been very hard to detect her blood when a pile of other soldiers were bleeding around her (for that matter she could have had bleeding wounds that confused the issue too).
