So is the slash potential actually great in this series, or is it just really deluded fangirls? After Melusine and Carol Berg's Transformation I don't really trust people when they say a book has practically canon slash.

Well, although the potential is there it's never realised so you'll need slashy googles. It's a bit one-sided, imo.
Berg's series has too much het to be slashy.

Haven't read the new trilogy, but from what I remember about the old ones, there's a definite crush on one side of the equation, but it's mostly unrequited. So the potential is there, but I wouldn't put money on the full realization of that potential in-series.
