Oh, I didn't know about the French BaTB. That's really disappointing! I've watched the old live action version in my English Lit class because my professor was obsessed with it and I fell in love with it too, and that made me realize that the French versions of the actual French fairytales that Disney were trying to spin were... always going to be better.

Eh. I don't know that I'd call the 2014 film "better" than what Disney'll come up with; the reviews weren't great and it had a definite "for the kiddies" feel, complete with cutesy critter buddies for Belle. And there's some, er, interesting differences between the 2014 film and the original fairy tales. On the other hand, fairy tales get retooled all the time and always have, plus Vincent Cassel as the Beast, fuck yeah! And the film was gorgeous, occasional cgi glut aside.

I always get confused between la belle et la bete (1946) and la princesse de cleves (1961). There's no particular reason I should, but the costuming and storytelling were so lovely to watch...

Ah! The one I watched was the '46 one and just, everything about it was SO gorgeous and I loved the story, the portrayal of the dynamic of the Beast and Belle... I'll haveta watch the '61 movie!
