Re: 21
1) The roots of manga have been around in Japanese culture way before you were born. No, seriously, unless you are a freaking senior citizen, manga's been around longer than you have been alive. LOL DECADES OF CULTURAL DECLINE.
2) Manga is full of historical stories of Japanese culture. The only reason you can't find them in your local bookstore is because they wouldn't translate well to outsiders. And even the ones you can find have pieces of culture reference in them.
3) EVERY CULTURE HAS A DIFFERENT FORM OF ART, YOU TWAT. DID THEY TEACH THAT IN YOUR FANCY-ASS INSTITUTION?
I suggest you read the book "Wrong About Japan" by Peter Carrey. Even though it takes place through the eyes of a manga fan, there is some amazing stuff in there about Japanese culture, even things no outsider could ever fully understand. Maybe you'd learn a thing or two!
Re: 21
*... yes, really*
While I will agree that most manga really is pop culture trash, there's so much of it that -isn't- and is at a quality level equal to the works of Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore. Ever read anything by CLAMP, to pull a name out of a hat? and I don't mean Rayeth or even X, I mean stuff like Clover.
I'm not saying it's BETTER than American works, just different, and you shouldn't dismiss the entire genre becuase 90% of it is crap. 90% of American comics are crap, doesn't stop 10% of it from being art.
Furthermore, the roots of manga can be traced back to Hokusai (he actually coined the term) who is one of the most famous Japanese artists of all time. ever seen the Great Wave? You know, that big huge Japanese wave that's in a bajillion commercials and has been parodied to death? Kinda the Mona Lisa of Japan? Yeah, that's Hokusai. And even before him, the Japanese were doing sequential storytelling pieces with art and text. The Tale of Genji, for instance, is one of the most popular examples, where fans of the work through the generations would make illustrated versions. And that's not even going into the little parody cartoons of buddhist monks as anthropomorphic animals like frogs, or how the manga "style" comes out of the old Japanese "hook for the nose, line for the eyes" style of extreme simplification of facial features.
So yeah. Manga has roots in Japanese classical art. Bitches.
