Text:
I'd like to keep an archive of interesting photos and articles about celebrities who mean a lot to me. Organised, preferably physical. Starting from when they first showed up on the radar, even if that was years and years ago. And even though I'm not in a good position to run a fansite/archive.

I've taken 0 steps in that direction in my lifetime, and it will likely remain this way.

S!B: improbable, impractical dream, logistical and possibly financial nightmare, plus saying this makes me look more dedicated/obsessed than I really am

Bonus naive N!S: I'd like to try working at a museum/archive one day.

All you have to do is start, OP; every task seems mountainous, until you take the first step.

Not sure what the requirements are to work in a museum, but do look into Library Science, or Information Management degrees/certification, for archival work. IM is still pretty pricey, but I've seen ads for Library Science MOOCs around. I'm not sure what kind of job entry potential that would get you, though.

Not much job potential, really. I got a Master's degree in Museum Studies and spent two years looking for a job before I finally gave up and got an Associate's degree in Computer Programming.

Although, if you're good at networking, you'll probably do better. Getting a museum job is all about networking. At which I am terrible, hence the move to programming. Still very bitter no one told me this before I spent all that time and money, but what are you gonna do. I still wish I'd been able to get a job in a museum, though.

I've been bad at networking so far, so I suppose a specific qualification won't be worth it for me. I'll just see where the road takes me, then. Thanks for sharing!

Absolutely, although now I sort of feel like I'm the crusher of dreams or something. It's not impossible to make a career of it, and I've seen people do it, but it's not easy, either. At least not in the US, maybe it's easier elsewhere.

The problem seems to be that museum people stay in their jobs til they die, so you end up applying for the same job a hundred and fifty other people are applying for (this is an actual figure I got once from a job I applied to), so your odds are not very good.

Still, there are other options. If you have the means to make it work, volunteering at a place you'd like to work can be a decent strategy as long as you're willing to wait for a paid position to open up. I ended up getting a short-term grant-funded position at a museum that way.

And hey, you could always do a double major with something that's a bit more likely to get you a job so you have something to fall back on if the museum/archive thing doesn't work out.

In any case, do what feels right for you, even if it doesn't seem the most practical option. I may be bitter over the time and money, but I met some of my best friends in grad school, which made it worthwhile anyway. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

Hey, no worries, I've always had doubts about it. I'll try sussing out what the job market and scopes are actually like around here first, I might not be a good fit for it anyway. And I have to get a move on learning varied/transferrable skills regardless.
