Ooh this makes me want to pick the comics up. I can't seem to get past the half-point in season 5, so would I be missing too much or would the comic fill me in just fine when it needs to?

I got a couple of Lone Gunman comics in a random box at a garage sale and it was awesome. Also includes were Babylon 5 and Indiana Jones. I felt bad for the dude who's wife was making him sell his collection because it had some randomly awesome ones.

I tend to end up buying classified ad stuff from dudes whose spouses got them to get rid of the collection. I think I kinda get it if they've got a hoarding problem and spending money they don't have though. Still always makes me pity them a bit, even if I'll take advantage lol

i forgive s5 all its sins and include it among the golden years because of post modern prometheus and because it was still filmed in vancouver. (it seems most people do it because of bad blood.)

Oh, I think s5 is still a good season on the whole. But that is completely unrelated to the conspiracy stuff in that season, which has definitely crossed the point of no return by that point.

Post Modern Prometheus and Bad Blood are both fantastic, tbh

i think the only solid mythology season is season 1. that whole aspect of the show became a mess way earlier than s5. personally, i stopped trying to make any sense of it in s3. motw was what txf did best, always.

Holy crap, someone who's more negative about the X-Files mythology than I am!

It's funny, because I kind of feel like there's not actually any mythology in season 1. There's bits and pieces of things that they end up picking up, but I don't think there's a coherent sense of This Is The Conspiracy like there is later on - there's also plenty of stuff they never pick up on (like the Eves), and lots of it is tonally off for where the mythology ends up going, and there's no 2-parters or anything. So really, to me, the mythology hardly starts until season 2. And then...

I like the season 3 mythology stuff, but mostly because I think the episodes (except Talitha Cumi, which blows) happen to be pretty good thriller conspiracy stories. Less because of any coherence it has. And then after that I think you have to give respect to the cancer storyline, which I think of as part of the myth arc, and which is the only reason I'll give any respect to any of the myth stuff after s3, and then after that it's all just pointless.

So what's really amazing to me is how quickly the myth arc went completely to shit, given that I feel like it only really showed up at the very end of Season 1. You have, like, two two-parters in s2, three in s3, and that's really kind of it. After that they ran out of interesting things to do except for the Scully's cancer stuff. And even with the episodes that were good, a ton of it was the result of chance and happenstance (Scully's abduction). It's kind of amazing, really, how little there ever was to the conspiracy stuff.

being negative about txf mythology isn't rare, or at least it really didn't use to be. plenty of hardcore fans stuck with the show for years despite its myth arc, not because of it.

i prefer the conspiracy hints we got from episodes like deep throat, eve, young at heart and EBE to what ended up being The Actual Colonization Conspiracy. classic case of ingredients being better than the final dish. one breath, colony, end game? didn't care for any of them. even baby me knew the stuff with the samantha clones was nonsense.

i think it says a lot that the only higher-up informant i've ever had any time for was deep throat (i'm bored to death by the syndicate, will never forgive chris carter for making CSM mulder's bilogical father) and that to this day i'm annoyed they didn't do more with senator richard matheson.

It's funny, because it seems so obviously true that the myth arc is bad, but I see tons of people being like LISTEN GUYS SEASON 8 ISN'T ACTUALLY THAT BAD, OKAY, I REALLY HOPE THEY BRING BACK DOGGETT AND WRAP UP HIS STORY ARC and I'm just like what on earth how can you really believe that

One Breath is fine although I agree that Colony/End Game is mediocre and Samanthaclones were never, ever, ever good. I do like the Syndicate, though. I don't think that they're particularly interesting but I guess I just appreciate well-dressed dudes in smoke-filled rooms. They were fine before anyone tried to make them more than that.

Deep Throat was the fucking best, yeah, but I think that's mostly because Jerry Hardin was good. Like most things I did like CSM a lot before his whole thing got wanky and pointless. I think that's kind of why season 2 and 3 worked for me with art plot stuff - they were okay just doing cool things and having them be cool things in more or less the way they appeared on the surface without reference to a larger whole.
