Goal post moving.

The problem here is a lot of the time american police don't need to use force like a gun and yet they do, several times into the person.

too trigger happy

There are definitely times when police use excessive force, but you can't say *all* deaths by police are unwarranted. There are times when excessive force is needed. Especially in America, which has a far bigger issue with guns and illegal guns than a lot of other countries do.

da

I'm pretty sure anon wasn't saying all deaths by police were unwarranted

I didn't say *all*.

The problem here is a lot of the time american police don't need to use excessive force like a gun and yet they do, several times into a person. or a restrained person. or someone running away. or someone not moving.

That is the problem. It is not excessive force, it is inappropriate force and poor training.

Okay, and my comment was about a man who shot/fired shots at police? Not all police deaths are caused by people who weren't attacking them.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Think what you're saying through a bit.

Yes, they often don't need to. The problem is, they often only realize this after the fact. It takes a split second for a suspect to pull out a gun and shoot a cop. So, yes, for many their first inclination will be to shoot first and ask questions later -- especially if the suspect has been uncooperative. Because if they aren't cooperating, that could suggest they have something to hide and thus would be more likely to shoot to get out of the situation.

If the cost of fucking up could be your life, it's not surprising that police are more willing to role the dice with the lives of others.

That's why you should always cooperate with the police.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
This, really. I always cooperate with police because I know I haven't done anything. Don't carry illegal guns on you, or rob convenience stores, or assault people and you might not have to be afraid of getting arrested. It's not hard.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's a nice sentiment. A little naive, but I'd like to think it's truly that easy.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's not naive to recognize the fact that the police would rather risk your life than their own. They're here to "protect and serve" but push comes to shove, none of them wants to die on the job.

That only works if you're white and relatively wealthy. If you're poor or black, fuck you. Especially if someone in a position of power or influence has a grievance against you.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
No, it kind of works for everyone.

When it comes down to it, police don't want to die for anyone. Be aware of that fact. It won't always protect you but my point was to explain why the police are trigger happy -- because they don't want to die because they fucked up. And if that means that you have to die, well, better you than them (in their minds).

And of course they're more suspicious of black and poor people -- black and poor people are much more likely commit the types of crimes police are called for.

Rich white people tend to commit white collar crimes which the police don't have to deal with usually.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Here's my point:

The police in the US are more trigger happy because suspects are more likely to be armed. That means, in essence, that if they fuck up, they are MUCH more likely to be killed. So, with that in mind, a police officer is much more likely to shoot because he or she would rather kill a suspect than be killed themself. Their motto might be "to protect and serve" but at the end of the day, they don't want to die on the job.

If you're confronting the police and are black or poor, this is especially worse because black and poor people tend to commit the types of crimes that police are called for. So they're more suspicious of black and poor people as a result.

Rich white people tend to commit white collar crimes which the police don't deal with and thus they tend not to be suspicious of rich white people as a result.

By "tend to" I should clarify that these are the crimes REPORTED to police. It's been well established that, for example, crimes committed by black or poor people are more likely to be reported.

Re: God Damn America

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-04-03 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
i say again: what

you do realize how close you're skirting "black people are more inclined to crime" right

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Wut

I said the types of crimes that police deal with, for one (did you even read what I wrote on white collar crime????)

for another, it's pretty well established that black and poor people are much more likely to be REPORTED for committing crimes

Guess what? If the crime isn't reported, then the police are MUCH less likely to deal with it -- thus, they're undoubtedly getting a skewed sample size

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think anon means cooperation = less likelyhood to be *killed*... only.

They seem to be saying, police may dump a whole bunch of other bullshit charges on you, but better that than death.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
This, basically. If you shoot at police, you will be shot back. It's not rocket science.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
The majority of people are concerned with the situations which don't warrant being shot. Which are abnormally common. Hence the concern. It's not rocket science.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm poor as shit and every time the police have hassled me, I cooperated. Surprise surprise, all I got out of it was them being assholes, but I wasn't arrested. Or assaulted. Or shot.

But hey, it totally makes no sense that attacking a police officer would-!Gasp!-make the police officer defend themselves.

That's really not what I'm saying though.

Re: God Damn America

(Anonymous) 2015-04-03 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
You said "poor or". My father is poor and dark skinned and has been stopped by police before, thinking he was someone else. He didn't attack the police, or shoot at them, and again, shock, he was let go. Crazy how not reacting violently doesn't get you shot, eh?

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-04-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I never said anything about reacting violently though.
